Condensed Update

OK, I am extremely far behind on this.  I will try and do better, but no promises.  So .... here is our last 2 months in a nut shell .... maybe some follow-ups with pictures.  But I am making no promises.

Mason ... the most exciting thing that has happened ~ TODAY Dr. Bazaz gave him the go ahead to play basketball as soon as it starts.  And he can start conditioning and getting back in to shape.

Nicole ... did very well in volleyball this year.  And then her foot swelled up and we discovered she has a stress fracture and is in a boot for a few weeks.

Dane ... He turned 10.  We will be celebrating it on Dec. 1 when we are in Manhattan watching the Wildcats vs. Longhorns.  Played Little Kids Football & is contemplating whether or not he'll go out for wrestling.

Abby ... Turned 9 and got a camera for her birthday.  She has been a picture taking fool.  Her flash is driving the rest of us nuts :) but she loves it so it's worth it.

Stan & I ~ well nothing much has changed there.  Still work, kids, work, kids, work, kids, etc.

Goodbye Summer

Hard to believe our "summer" is basically over.

Mason is still on his crutches, gets to toss them away the first day of school.  And maybe, just maybe .... he will be release from knee surgery at the START of basketball season :) A ray of hope from the news of after the first of the year.  In the meantime, he is completely bored and standing around everyday at football practice.

Nicole has started volleyball.  I am very pleased with her.  And she is adapting and everynow and then I hear "Coach Mom"

Dane has decided to play football again this year.  He debated & debated and now is all kinds of excited.

Abby is going with the flow with our busy lives and getting ready for 3rd grade.  This is the first year; however, that she says "I'm not ready for school to start." So she has hit that milestone that all the other kids have.  But that's ok .... I'm not ready for school to start either.

As for all my new adventures this year ~ I am flat tired.  First week of practice, juggling work & home.  I have not quite adjusted to the routine, but will get there (eventually).

Not what we were expecting

Last week Mason had knee surgery. He tore his meniscus at Regional Track .... after getting in there, they discovered that where it was tore it was better to repair and give it a chance to heal instead of cutting it out.  Unfortunately, that means he now has LONG recovery ahead of him.  Instead of 4 weeks, he is facing 6 months. Now we are really hoping & praying that it heals correctly.

Growing up TOO fast

Last week my (not so) little (anymore) girl got asked to go play basketball for the next 2 weekends.  She was beyond excited at the opportunity to go .... even though she didn't know of the girls .... just kind of knew them from playing against them the last 2 summers at Grinnell.

SO on Friday I dropped her off in Sharon Springs to go spend the weekend in Denver playing ball.  Yeah for her, very hard on me.  Anxiously awaiting her arrival back in Sharon so I can hear how it all went.

Next weekend .... off to the Sunflower Games in Topeka to play .... This time, I plan on being there :)

Summer fun

We got a new toy today ... Fun times and memories at the lake will be in the making.

Family resemblance

We have always thought that Dane favored my Uncle Jodie.  My Mom brought this picture out the other day and drove the point  home!!

His father's son

Critters

We've seen raccoons and skunks and even a bobcat in the yard .... Set the trap and of course, catch something else. Can't waitntonsee what ends up in the trap next! And then we see the snake eating a frog ... It takes ALOT longer than what they show on the nature channels

Waiting Game

Dane wrecked his bike ... Thought he broke his hand. He hardly slept at all, kept me up :( Off to the ER bright and early.  The PA couldn't see a break so he just sprained his wrist. Fingers still swell up, so we will see. But he able to do a few more things with it today. Yeah!!!

Very happy for Mason's accomplishments today.  For a kid who was not about to go out for track ... he was very successful at the league meet today and placed 3rd in high jump, 3rd in triple jump and 6th in the 800 today at Oberlin.

Off with one, here comes another

Where did the weekend go

Basketball & Prom ... what a busy weekend we have had.

Dane & Nicole played 3 on 3 Saturday in Hoxie and then I helped sponsor prom Saturday night.  Crazy tired.  Oh, and Abby had a baby bunny in the house that got out.  Thankfully Dane found it and it is now OUTSIDE where it belongs!!!

Dying Eggs

Dane & Abby were determined that if there was a color combination to make with the food coloring ... they were going to create it :) They had a good time coloring the eggs ~ Nicole helped too; but, she wasn't "dressed" for the occasion so she opted out of the pictures

Hot Hoops

We spent the day in Brewster yesterday so Dane & Nicole could play in a 5 on 5 tournament.  Literally all day ... us girls left the house at 6:30 am and got home at 10 pm. :) But I love that they want to play!!!

Nicole's team ended up 4th ... and Dane's team didn't win any games, but they could have.

Dane isn't afraid to shoot if they give him the window (or if it's launching one from a distance) ... he just couldn't get them to fall. By his 3rd game he was taking it to the basket and drawing the foul.

Nicole played well ... and as her coach, I expect alot from her while she's on the floor. She does a good job accepting my challenges :) And during our last game she got in foul trouble and set most of the 1st half ... and while she was playing, got a quick education on what it was like to have 3 girls collapse as soon as she touched the ball.

March Madness

While I don't fill out bracket predictions ... I do follow everything rather closely.

Today, Abby gets a movie at Wal-Mart and on the way home she says "Mom, can I watch this on the big TV when we get home instead of you watching basketball?"  Haha, of course I let her & low and behold I MISSED THE MIZZOU UPSET.  Ugghh

Rare Disease Awareness

I had it brought to my attention about a month ago that Febrary 29 was Rare Disease Awareness Day & asked again what Abby had been diagnosed with 3 years ago.

Abby was diagnosed with Charot-Marie-Tooth, which is a hereditary neurological disease.  What is even odder ... neither Stan nor I have any symptoms so we're still not sure where she "inherited" this genetic disorder from.  It can just happen, but that is not usually the case.  And at this stage in the game, we haven't done the genetic testing because it is cost prohibitive.

CMT is a progressive disease that attacks your peripheal nerves (nerves below your knees and elbows).  Currently, Abby is only showing signs in her legs and only significantly in one.  Because of CMT, she cannot control her big toe.  You may be able to sit there and pull your big toe up towards the sky ... Abby's simply hangs there.  Which can make it difficult for her to put on her shoes.  She also walks on the outside of her foot and sprains her ankle easily.  She has had a couple doozies over the last couple years.  She currently wears an ankle brace for support which helps tremendously.  Some day ... she may have to also progress in to orthodics, but for the time being this brace does the trick.

I could continue on and on with much more :).  Our neurologist, Dr. Yang, is awesome.  We see her once a year & she has assured us there are only 2 things in life that Abby will never accomplish ... 1. She will not be a marathon runner and 2. She won't be a broadway dancer.  Beyond those two ... Abby will still be able to accomplish whatever she wants to in life. We are fortunate ... if there is a form of CMT you would wish to be diagnosed with, that is Abby. Every year when we go to Children's I am reminded of this.  My baby girl can walk, she can run, she can hop, she can skip & jump.  Many of the other children we see come in to their appointments confined to wheel chairs & struggle to even walk up and down the hall for the myriad of people we see at the checkups.  Each year we consult with Dr. Yang, we see physical therapists, we see occupational therapists, we see representatives from The Muscular Distrophy Association & a few other areas I can't even remember.

Lovin' this new calf

Abby's calf out of her heifer.  Her choice whether she will sell it or keep it (it's a heifer).  AND both of her brothers want to buy it ... it could be very interesting at our house fighting over this little beauty.
